The historic center and Via dei Mercanti

Salerno’s medieval axis is one of the most beautiful walks in Southern Italy. Artisan shops, noble palaces, alleyways opening onto unexpected little squares. Walking it slowly is already a way to understand this city.

The Cathedral of San Matteo

Founded in the 11th century by Robert Guiscard, the Cathedral is the symbolic heart of Salerno. The crypt holds the relics of the apostle Matthew; the Arab-Norman bell tower has dominated the rooftops of the historic center for nearly a thousand years.

Arechi Castle

At 300 meters above sea level, the Lombard castle offers one of the most spectacular views in Campania: the city, the sea, the Coast on the horizon. Going there at sunset is almost a must.

The Garden of Minerva

Attached to the Salerno Medical School, the oldest in Europe, this small hanging garden in the heart of the historic center is considered the first botanical garden in Western history. A quiet place, out of time.

Lungomare Trieste

One of the longest waterfronts in Italy. In the evening it fills with local life. A genuine immersion in the daily rhythm of the South.

Luci d'Artista

From November to January the historic center transforms into an open-air gallery. Light installations by international artists illuminate streets and squares in an event worth the trip.
